Being Thankful

thanks

It’s easy for us to be thankful when life’s going well; when are relationships are happy, when our health is good, when we enjoy our job. When our current circumstances are positive, how we want them to be, thanking God is easy. But how do we learn to thank God when things aren’t going how we want them to? When relationships crumble, health scares crop up, the bullies defeat us and our job situation makes life stressful? Life gives us ups and downs, and we can either be at the lowest point in our life, or feel as if we are on top of the world.

A scripture from the book of James reads:

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:2-4

These scriptures highlight the fact that when we face these difficult and troubling times in life, they are perhaps trials and our faith is being tested. And this isn’t a bad thing! If we aren’t tested, how can we grow spiritually? We may not understand this, as we will never be able to comprehend God and all of the things he does, however we can know that God makes all things work together for our good. He is using these hard times to strengthen our faith in Him. Paul discusses this topic of trials and testing in Romans 5:3-5, the scriptures reading:

3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”

Even when we are in these positions of feeling like life isn’t going as well as it should be, Paul say that God blesses us with the Holy Spirit so that our hearts are filled with His love. When we are facing these trials, God still loves us, and will keep our hearts filled with his everlasting and eternal love.

So what can we do to remain thankful in these times? When nothing is going right, how can we find something to thank God for? Well, we can always find something to thank God for. His endless love, his protection. The things he blesses us with (a home, food, water, family, friends)- things we take for granted that someone else may be praying for. And of course, we can thank God for the biggest thing He did for us. Dying on the cross. When he sacrificed His one and only son, for our sins, so that we can live. We are given eternal life through the blood of Christ, and that is something we can thank Him for everyday.

What are you thankful for today?

1 Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth!
    Worship the Lord with gladness.
Come before him, singing with joy.
Acknowledge that the Lord is God!
He made us, and we are his.
We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving;
go into his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good.
    His unfailing love continues forever,
and his faithfulness continues to each generation.” – Psalm 100
